Whyte – GlasgowIs a collaboration between electronic composer and musician, Ross Whyte and Gaelic singer-songwriter, Alasdair Whyte. The collaboration began as a commission by the organisation Ceòl ‘s Craic to bring together artists from the fields of electronic and traditional music for a live performance. Taking inspiration from Alasdair’s research interest in 17 th- and 18 th- century Gaelic song and poetry, the duo began working on new ambient electronic arrangements of several rarely-heard songs as well as original compositions. Their music has drawn comparisons with Sigur Rós and Martyn Bennett.
His debut album, ‘Fairich’, will be released on 21 October 2016.
John Thomson – Coatbridge
John is a largely acoustic singer songwriter who cites his influences as everyone from the blues and ragtime legends who are Big Bill Broonzy and Arthur Blake through to British contemporary musicians such as Ralph McTell, Kieran Goss and Scotland’s own Dougie MacLean and American singer songwriters such as James Taylor and Don McLean. A relative newcomer to performing, John’s precise fingerpicking guitar style compliments his vocal delivery to build a full and generous sound that is well received in the folk clubs and sessions of central Scotland.
Jay Mansfield –Glasgow
Hailing from Barrhead, a town where nothing much happens, Jay Mansfield’s introduction to music came via the Transformers the Movie soundtrack, his father’s Paul McCartney records, and a Guns ‘n’ Roses tape he’d received in a swap deal involving Bryan Adams’. A number of short-lived bands followed, but the desire to write music and sing in front of strangers means that he’ll always come back to ploughing a long, solo furrow. Inspired by the music of Manic Street Preachers, Doves, Hans Zimmer, and Public Service Broadcasting, he continues to try to work out how you recreate such lush sounds when you’re just one man with his guitar… …and the occasional harmonica.
